France protests followed by unrest, arrests and injuries

Nationwide protests in France over the cost of living and school conditions were followed by unrest in several cities. Authorities estimated about 550,000 people took part, while organisers put turnout at 800,000. Nearly 2,400 arrests were reported, more than 600 police officers, gendarmes and firefighters were said to have been injured, and two teenagers sustained life-changing injuries. President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence and said those responsible would be held accountable.
